What’s Language?

Language is used by a speaker to communicate with a listener. The communication system may be through Oral or Written version. The functions of language include the expressions of identity, imagination and emotion. English is a member of Indo-European family. The word ‘Language’ is derived from a Latin word ‘Lingue’ which means something produced with the help of tongue.

Many definitions of language:

Henry Sweet has stated,  “Language is the expression of ideas by means of speech sounds

combined into words.”

George L. Trager and Bernard Bloch have defined, “A language is a system of arbitrary vocal symbols by means of which a social group cooperates.”

Many definitions of language:

Noam Chomsky says that language is the inherent capability of native speakers to understand and form grammatical sentences. A language is a set of (finite or infinite) sentences, each finite length constructed out of a limited set of elements.

Three Language Concept:

A learner should learn three different languages because they are needed. First one is his mother language. Second one is the language which is highly used in his surroundings because of the uses of several native languages. The rest one is the official language. In India these are needed.
